Guacolda U5 Project: Seawater Intake Siphon

Seawater intake siphon for Unit 5 of Central Guacolda, with 100 ton Jacket and H45 underwater concrete.

Huasco, Atacama Region · 2013–2015

Guacolda Thermoelectric Power Plant · Energy

The cooling system of a thermoelectric power plant requires a robust and reliable seawater intake, with structures capable of withstanding waves and the marine environment throughout its useful life.

STS Scope

Construction of the seawater intake siphon for the cooling system of Unit 5 at the Guacolda Thermoelectric Power Plant. The project included bathymetric surveys, massive underwater concrete work (2,200 m³ of H45 class concrete, with compressive strengths up to 1,000 kgf/cm²), foundation concrete, and the maritime operation of launching, floating, transporting, and assembling a 100-ton jacket structure, including drilling and anchor installation through its piles. 1,870 hours of Industrial Commercial Diving (CTP) were performed under ADCI standards, without accidents.

Differentiator

STS carried out the massive underwater pouring of high-strength concrete (2,200 m³ H45 class, up to 1,000 kgf/cm²) and the maritime maneuver of launching, floating, moving, and assembling a 100-ton Jacket structure, anchored via its piles. All of this involved 1,870 hours of Industrial Commercial Diving in accident-free dives under ADCI regulations, a standard of safety and precision that is difficult to match.
