New generation desalination plants supply the mining industry with seawater through large-diameter marine works, long underwater traces and critical dimensional tolerances that demand maximum construction precision.
Construction of the marine intake and discharge works for the Minera Los Pelambres desalination plant. The intake line includes passive filters, a 1,800 mm HDPE pipe laid in a trench on the seabed (approx. 492 m), and a 1,800 mm internal diameter, 341 m long concrete-lined tunnel with internal backwash and hypochlorite piping. The brine discharge line consists of a 1,200 mm HDPE pipe on the seabed (approx. 625 m) and a 530 m long concrete tunnel.
STS simultaneously executed the large-diameter intake and discharge lines, combining HDPE pipe laying in underwater trenches with concrete-lined tunnels. The volume of material, the length of the pipeline routes, and the hydraulic complexity place this project among the most technically demanding in Chilean desalination, within the reach of very few contractors.
